3 Thoughts on Joy.
Too often I fail to choose joy in my job, but I must remember that joy is their for the taking. I must remember that I am at my best when I am joyful. I must remember that Joy is contagious. I must remember that joy is a fruit of the spirit.
It is there for the taking.
“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.”- Henri Nouwen
“People who have come to know the joy of God do not deny the darkness, but they choose not to live in it. They claim that the light that shines in the darkness can be trusted more than the darkness itself and that a little bit of light can dispel a lot of darkness. They point each other to flashes of light here and there, and remind each other that they reveal the hidden but real presence of God.” – Henri Nouwen
When our job presents the opportunity for unadulterated joy we must live into it. Summer time in YL presents more opportunities than the rest of the year. Stay up too late on an assignment having fun, hang out with kids, play golf with donors. The best case is for us to find joy doing everyday things, until then we must at least live fully into the opportunities for joy that are right in front of us.
Our job is heavier and harder than most people realize, we are not entitled to them understanding that. Our job also presents incredible opportunities for joy— don’t miss them.
We perform best when we are joyful.
“The Golden State Warriors were able to weaponize joy. That was their appeal. They were better when they played as if they were happy, and when that emotion became infectious, they weren’t only even better—they were the best NBA team of all time.”
“We play better when we’re having fun and enjoying the moment,” Stephen Curry said. “We played like we were really stressed in OKC—and it showed.”
Joy is contagious
“The single greatest way to motivate the people around you is to live a motivated life around them. “ Bill Hybels
The same thing can be said for joy. The single greatest way to bring out joy in the people around you is to live joyfully around them.
